EDITORIALS JUNE 21, 2017 3:50 PM California Democrats have no sense of shame

We’d like to believe that state Democrats would not dig into their bag of dirty tricks to pass budgets and maintain power. But they’ve clearly established that the rules don’t apply to them. Frankly, we are not surprised. As the 19th century British politician Lord Acton said, “Absolute power corrupts absolutely.”

Thus voters must take matters into their own hands during the 2018 election and dilute the power of Democrats. That will be a tall order in California, where the Republican Party has lost its way by backing extremist candidates and taking far-right policy positions that frighten mainstream voters.

But there is great opportunity for reasonable Republicans who tell voters, “I know the difference between right and wrong, and I am embarrassed by what I see in Sacramento. Have you seen our state flag? It says, California Republic – not Banana Republic.”
